Alot of good answers here, and all of them correct. You can tile over existing tile using mastic, But if it were mine, I would want to tear it off to see what was in there. It may not have been done right the first time. Tear it all off down to the studs, inspect for any rot or mildew, check your plumbing, get some plastic and staple it all the way around (assuming this is a shower) and then use duroc or Hardibacker, seal your joints and put your new tile on, grout it and you have a properly done job, with 2 extra hours into it. And may head off any future problems.

yes you can tile over tile, assuming it is solid and well bonded and it will last. instead of water you mix a latex additive in the mortar. it is very difficult to work with sets up quickly and will not come off any surface you accidentally you get it on.
hope this link works:

I'm sure there are other brands, but it is what I'm familiar with.
And now that I've said it can be done, I don't recommend it. Setting tile on walls can be messy. And the mortar won't clean up easily. And once you start trying to remove tile from a wall the substrate usually comes with it, if it was set right. Therefore, you probably need to remove the tile AND substrate and start from scratch.
Good Luck

I agree with fearjar. You could tile over tile, but its best to do it right and go back to a solid, clean base that is free of mold and other defects. This gives you a chance to inspect the plumbing (which according to Murphy's law will burst if you don't check it) and will make for a more even installation.

Yes you can
but Its not the ideal way to tile a wall,
you Will need to cover the existing tiles with"unibond" or something similar-to provide a good "bond",before you apply the new adhesive.

Sure if you want it to look like $hit and have the new tiles poping off. Otherwise, you should strip off the old tiles and properly prep the wall.

I am sure you could, but I would recommand that you don't only because the backing board provides a more reliable surface to add the Adhesive to thus giving you a better surface when applying new tiles giving it the best look and result and duribilty.
