AL: Johan Santana (He carried the Twins when Liriano went down)
NL: Albert Pujols (He kept the Cards' butts out of the fire)

I'll start with the AL, and I predict Jeter will win it. Yes, Giambi and A- Rod and the whole lineup is fierce, but I think Jeter was the steady influence on the team that had the league's best record. I think he'll be rewarded this year, and he deserves it, with some apologies to Ortiz, Morneau (but Mauer, Santana, Nathan and even Cuddyer were all huge for the Twins as well) and Frank Thomas.
The NL is a two-horse race between Howard and Pujols. Three weeks ago, I thought it was Howard's to lose. And, through no real fault of his own, he may have lost it. He was continually pitched around, and he should not be faulted for the Phils not making the wild card. His second half numbers were enormous - the best in MLB - and his first half was very good as well.
The case for Pujols can also be made easily. His numbers overall are at least as good as Howard's. He's behind in HRs and RBIs, but ahead in BA, OPS, game-winning rbis, hitting with men in scoring position, etc. I would not give it to Pujols simply because the Cards made the playoffs, because Howard carried his team just as impressively.
I'm a Phils fan, and I love Howard. But Pujols is my favorite, and I think the best, player in the game. Compared to Howard, he's the better fielder, better baserunner, hits more often in the clutch, and strikes out about a third as often!
I'd be delighted if they tied for the award, but if I only had to pick one, it would be Albert Pujols.
Honorable mention: Berkman (most underrated great player in the game) and Beltran.

In the NL, I think Pujols edges Howard because Howard fell off a bit at the end of the season when his team needed him to pick it up the most. He had good RBI numbers, but was LOB alot whereas he could've gotten more runs with homers.
In the AL, its easy to see that the most consistent player on an injury plagued team that STILL has the best record in baseball deserves it. Jeter, all the way. (Although, I do like Santana, it's been awhile since a pitcher won Cy and MVP.)
The Sox didn't make the post season and Ortiz doesn't do anything but hit. You don't play defense, you're not as valuable to your team, period, and don't deserve the MVP. Maybe if he played first or something.

Pujols is NL MVP plain and simple. His team got into playoffs even if it was backing in and his BA with RISP is way bettter than Howard's. Howard had a great year but if you look at the situational stats and defense, Pujols easily tops any NL player.
I don't watch or care about the AL but I'd go with Morneau.

I agree with Pujols and Santana. There have been no 2 other players that have carried their teams into the playoffs the way these guys have.
Howard has been good, but the Phillies wouldnt have made it anywhere without Utley. Jeter had an awesome year, but the yankees are just plug and play at this point. Too much talent on that team for any one player to be indespensible.

Beltran?? That's just silly. Pujols and Howard are both no-brainers over him. I'm not even sure I'd call him the Mets MVP, with Wright and Reyes on the squad. My vote goes to Howard.
In the AL, I agree with your pick of Mauer or Morneau.

In the AL my MVP goes to Derek Jeter, he's had an unbelievable year, and is such a solid defensive player as well.
NL MVP goes to Albert Pujols, because despite a great year by Ryan Howard he got his team into the playoffs and his statistics are much better than Ryan's.

AL- Jeter. He carried the team when they needed it most. Great, great player.
NL- One of the Mets?
Tough call, thats like asking who's the best player for the 4th or 5th best team in baseball. Everybody knows the NL is weak, the worst AL playoff team is better than the best NL team.
