For parking spaces (ie: supermarket or mall) When there is no divider or median or concrete 'log' in the way. I was recently (by a citizen) told that the law is that you can't drive THROUGH to be facing out to park (of two 'face to face' spaces).
True or not?

it's not a direction issue.. or a private property issue. I've been doing it forever, but one guy said that he will park and stop at the line and not drive thru because it was against the law. I'm just trying to figure out if it is or not and it's just not ever enforced.

Oh, one last thing. no signs that say head-on parking only or anything like that. I'd respect those.

Of course there's no such law. It's kind of like I had a woman hit me in a WalMart parking lot, there were other witnesses besides me, and she didn't bother to stop. The policeman said he'd run her plates as a courtesy to me for insurance, but that he couldn't ticket her since it was a private parking lot. It's a civil matter. If the lot's owner has posted policies and you don't obey them, they can have you towed, but that's about it. And even their posted policies don't always mean squat to the law, such as signs that say the retailer isn't liable for any property damage if their carts should roll into your vehicle -- they are liable. They just post those to deter you from suing them. Or the alarms at the doors that tell you you have to stop -- if you haven't shoplifted anything (say the clerk just didn't demagnetize something), then they can't legally stop, detain or touch you, and doing so against your will is assault. And until you physically walk through the door, you aren't guilty of shop lifting, anyway. So, don't worry about the misguided comments of citizens on the street. He was probably just saying that because it was a pet peeve of his and he wanted to scare you into doing what he thinks is appropriate.

Unfortunately, there is no law that controls this (at least not here in CA). Parking lots are considered private property, and any directional arrows, stop signs, etc., are suggestions based on the property owner's preference.

In parking lots where each row only drives in one direction, this may not be the most considerate thing to do, as you would then be driving in the "wrong" direction when you leave. If you're doing this in a parking lot where each row allows traffic in both directions, I see nothing wrong with it, from a consideration of others perspective.

Do you really think a cop is going to stop you on the private property that a mall or supermarket parking lot is, in order to ticket you? What if you backed in? No, no such law, although it is possible your mall or supermarket may make a request of head in parking only. If so there should be signs to that effect.

why not? they are private property, meaning the police have limited authority there, and besides, I do it all the time.

It doesn't hurt anything and it typically rather beneficial to the parker.
