about 7-1/2" It depends on the total rise. for example, total rise for 9' ceiling is 9' 11-1/8", assuming 2x10 joists and 3/4" decking. That means 16 Risers at 7-7/16" It won't come out perfect, but you split the difference between the first and last riser. Start with 7-1/2" divide it into the total rise, and then you will get a number of risers. 9' 11-1/8" divided by 7-1/2" is you get 15.8833 risers, which you round to 16 risers and you divide 9' 11-1/8" by 16 you get about 7-7/16". Fortunately, I have a construction calculator that makes it easy for me to do the numbers.

If you are building stairs for a deck, you can fudge the total rise a bit to make the numbers easier. Just don't make the difference too much (1/4" or so) or you will have toe stumper.

Good Luck

7 inches. It's better to go shorter than higher if you have to or take all of the excess distance out with a shorter first step.
