This is an unanswerable question since they are such dissimilar artists.
Zappa was a prolific genius with "The Mother's of Invention" etc.
He made a myriad of great albums including Apostrophe, Overnight Sensation, Sheik Yerbuti, The Best Band you Never Heard in you life and others like Joe's Garage and his Opus, Yellow Shark (terrific ensemble modern).
Syd Barrett, on the other had, was taken out of commission so early because of his bout with mental illness. He made great albums as founder of Pink Floyd with Roger Waters: Piper at the Gates of Dawn etc. - great singles like "Arnold Lane", Astronomy Domini, Interstellar Overdrive, Bike and others.
He put out two official solo releases: "Barrett" and "The Mad Cap Laughs", they are both terrific. Another album was released later, "Opal", and although a must have for Barret fans, it doesn't live up to his previous work.
But seriously...comparing them? The both shine like the sun...compare on sun from another...you'll go blind :)

It depends on the drugs you are on......
If you are just sitting around smoking pot or getting high on life, Zappa definitely.
If you are on mushrooms, LSD, or mescaline, Pink Floyd for sure.
If life gets you high - both are good but I think you will get more out of Zappa.
Oh and Syd Barret was a very psychadelic member of Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa was, well Frank Zappa.
I think I'm moving to Montana soon, gonna grow me a crop of dental floss.......

Zappa was better - I have owned ALL his records and saw him three times. Uncle Meat album is great.
Syd Barrett didn't do all that much after Pink Floyd. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was good, but he fried his brain.
Zappa did rock, jazz, classical, comedy and politics.
No comparison.

FZ had a Phd. in music theory as I recall and if you had ever been to one of his concerts you would have seen how much of a musical genius he was( I am gross and perverted, obsessed and deranged. I have existed for years, have you guessed me yet???..I am the slime oozing out of your Tv set!). As for Syd......no comment !

Name a Zappa song? "Trouble Every Day" written in 1965. It appeared on the LP "Freak Out" in 1966.
Name a Barrett song? How 'bout "Octopus Ride" or "Scream Thy Last Scream"? Name a Syd LP, "The Madcap Laughs".
Zappa was a composer, an engineer, a polytalented musician with a 30+ year career and 100 official albums in his catalog as of earlier this year. Syd has less than a tenth of that corpus, even with all the bootlegs (such as "Have You Got It Yet? 1.0 Vols 1-10)
