Practice, I work as a manicurist and it takes practice and motivation and common sense. Make it easy for yourself, thin nails can be worn short and as long as they are neat, they look nice. The claw nails are out anyway. Keep yours short so they won't tear and annoy you, almost all nail biters have thin nails. Treat your cuticles with creams and lotions, develop a love affair with your finger tips. Sometime polish helps (look too good to damage) but thin nails generally don't hold polish well (don't let manicurists buff them, they'll get thinner) and it often chips off at the edges so pick a french type sheer color, won't show if it wears or chips. keep a file handy to take care of rough edges. Use a lot of lotion to keep cuticles soft.
Like anything else you want to achieve in life remind yourself of why you want to stop (it is an important health consideration, besides the scarring I see on finger tips, putting your fingers in your mouth is a great way to get what-ever germs are around (unless you scrub the first)) and some of them are serious, imagine yourself licking everything you touch, it's the same thing. Biting nails can ruin nail beds for life and then there is no way to repair the damage.
Maybe ask friends to kindly remind you when you do since it is often unconscious, like any life change, if you keep at it and ignore the frustration, don't react to people who tease or are bossy (I've seen kids fail at it because their parents pestered them and they react, remember, this is for YOU), you will do it if you keep your goals in mind and just keep at it. It can take years and sometimes people slip under stress, like any habit. Keep your goals in mind.

I am so glad you asked this. I also am a nail biter, so bad that they bleed sometimes and I can't stop. Even with the bitter nail stuff or tabasco, I still bite until the terrible taste is gone. The only thing that helps me is to get fake nails put on, and that is very expensive. My next option is to try the willpower thing that was suggested to you. Good luck with quiting, I am right there with you, I hope you finally get relief from this.

Keep an emery board with you and at the least snag or crack, file the bad nail back to a presentable form. Soon you'll be proud of them and will grow reluctant to bite them. Keep a supply of hard candy in your pocket and enjoy them rather than your nails.
The collagen in hair conditioners will also help them to strengthen and grow. So wash and rinse your hair every day.

Try to get your nails done or do them yourself, if your nails are looking pretty you most likely won't want to ruin that by biting them. Good luck with ending this habit.

if you put some sort of hair band round your wrist and every time you feel like you are going to bite your nails ping it it will mean that you think of pain when you go to bite your nails you can also cut or file them down because the vibrations from the file make your nails grow stronger

there is this specail nail polish just for nail biting. u put it on and it tastes like crap. once u put your fingers to your lips, you'll taste it and wont want to bite your nails anymore. or you could wear gloves (kinda stupid but whatever) or keep your hands in your pockets. this helps me because im a nail biter, hope it helps you too :-D

I was exactly the same! RED NAIL VARNISH! Every time you go to put them by your mouth the red reminds you not to. Today I removed the red nail varnish and I've bitten them all off! :(

keep a nail file in your bag and as soon as you get a snag smooth it off.
this way you will not be so tempted to bite it.
Also if you do put it in your mouth it wont catch on your teeth inadvertantly
