Americans are smart people therefore, they will vote for who they feel is the best candidate, not what state he is from. By the same token, Americans are often erroneous with their choice, so it's a possibility we will get presidents as weak as the two you have in mind.

Americans elect the individual the MAJORITY of them feel is the most qualified. We don't care what state they are from. Hell, we've even elected jerks from Massachusetts. They weren't the most qualified, the majority just thought they were.
