I gave my daughter a guinea pig when she turned 9. She has been responsible and able to care for it with only daily checking on it from me. We already had 2 full grown cats so she already understood about animals needing love and attention. I needed to teach her how to clean out the cage 1x/ week and how much to feed it daily. What i like about the guinea pig is that it sleeps during the night and is awake and interactive during the day (unlike hamsters and gerbils which sleep in the day and are not interactive/affectionate). It enjoys being held (if held daily when it is a baby) and makes little sqeaks to say hello when my daughter comes home from school. We also let it run in a enclosed room for exercise once a day.
If your kids like furry animals, i recommend a guinea pig.

My kids are aged 6 & 8 years old. I've just bought them a Giant African Land Snail. My kids love them. The are only babies at the moment, but they don't take much looking after. All you have to do is make sure their tank is nice and damp, they have fresh food offered to them, and a cuttlefish availble to them for calcium (for their shells). Snails aren't exactly cuddly, but they don't jump out of your hand and scuttle off under the sofa only to come out late at night to chew through the skirting boards. They don't bite either. Their shells can grow up to 7 inches long which makes them a really novel topic of conversation. They aren't a common pet, so this makes them even more appealing to kids.... and they are really cute! Yes, seriously!

Rats are really good. They don't bite. They are awake during the day. They can eat almost anything your kids give them so you don't have to worry about them dying from wrong food. They're actually really good pets. I've tried gerbils, and they bit me and slept all day. My rabit was very messy. My sister had a bird when she was 8 and didn't do well with it at all. She wanted to give it baths and that didn't work out very well. We've tried hermit crabs and we can't keep them alive. My friend has a turtle and it tried to bite us whenever we get close to it. I hope you find something that will work out well with you and your kids.

Great pets are hamsters, rats, mice, beta fish, or really any small animal.
However I would not suggest a rabbit, guinea pig, or ferret. All of these require a lot of attention and care, most people don't realize how much of a handful they really are.

Turtles or Tortoises make excellent pets for younger kids. They're relatively low-maintenance; the kids can't hurt them easily; and they don't tear up your house or yard.
