Studies show that caffeine does pass to your infant through your milk.... while it doesn't do any harm, it will cause disruptions in sleep, etc. (all the things it does to us adults). What you must know is that caffeine accumulates in a baby-- in other words, it takes them longer to metabolize it than it does for adults.
According to the La Leche League Breastfeeding Answer Book, the amount of caffeine that takes us 5 hours to get out of our system, takes 96 hours in a newborn -- and 14 hours in a 3 to 5 month old.
Caffeine withdrawal symptoms (headaches, etc.) will also be apparent in a newborn.
Keep that in mind if you find it's worth it to drink coffee, tea and soda. Also, caffeine is in some over-the-counter medicines.
Can you find happiness in herbal teas? (remember not to steep the bags too long, as some herbs also effect infants.)

It absolutely passes to your baby through your milk but its a question of quantity - if you drink a cup or two a day you and your baby should be fine. If you drink cola, be sure to include that in the count too. If you find your baby having trouble sleeping, irritable or jittery, try to limit or cut out entirely your intake of caffeine. Another thing to be aware of is that caffeine is a diuretic, drawing out valuable fluids from your body and filling you up when you should be eating healthy to produce all that nice milk for your little one. I'm not one to talk too much here though on this, I never did give up my chocolate!

There is a good chance that it does. The harm could be constipation to the baby, allergies, and not wanting to feed. Just steer clear of tea or coffees with caffeine. Decaf teas are pretty good, especially the fruit flavored ones.

Yes, caffeine does pass to baby through breastmilk.

Most experts consider it safe for a breastfeeding woman to consume moderate amounts of caffeine and it is approved for use in breastfeeding mothers by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Some babies react badly to caffeine in the mother's diet. They act like an adult who has had too much coffee. Each baby is different and you'll have to experiment to see what kind of tolerance your baby has. Older babies usually deal with caffeine better than newborns.

Yes it does. You should only have one 8 oz caffeine beverage a day. Whether it be coffee or tea.

According to my doctor's yes it passes through. However they do not know how much gets passed through (just like while pregnant) which is why they suggest limiting the intake.

Yes, the caffene will go to your child but also, caffene makes the mammory glands very tender and painful. They swell more, so for your comfort and sanity (when he/she gets hyper) I would go with decaf for awhile.
