If you withdrew for a family medical reason, they should be more forgiving. There might be paperwork required for you to fill out, but still, if it means the chance to save your GPA, look into it.
As far as good schools go, there's lots of them! If you want to get a degree in paleoanthropology, find a state college that offers it and go because you don't have to pay major bucks to get an education.

Were you at Harvard before? If so -- you should talk with them. You might be able to get back into the school where you were if they knew your circumstances.

When you apply to any school, you can include a note explaining why you left school when you did, and the effect it had on your grades. They will understand that it does not reflect your abilities (though you should still point this out). If everything else is in order, you should be able to get in somewhere.

You might have better luck with some of the better state schools (Berkeley, Michigan, UNC, Virginia) than the private schools -- but don't give up.
