When is the appropriate time to call a potential employer to see if they have made a decision about the Job you interviewed for and what is the best approach to ask the question

I think you'd be surprised how many applicants never call. This leaves employer's thinking they just don't care enought to check in.

The day after you interview, you should send the interviewer a thank you letter for their time and saying you look forward to hearing from them soon.

You should call the next week if you haven't heard yet and speak to the person who interviewed you. Tell them you were checking to see if they have made any decisions about the position as you are very interested. If you can, ask if you are being seriously considered for this position as you are being approached by another company but you are more interested in their company.

Always send a thank you after the interview, ask their time frame for responses during the interview and how many more days they are interviewing then give them three working days before you call back and be assertive. Don't ask questions that will get you just a yes or no answer. Remember, you are the only one you want them to hire so act like it.

I'd wait at least three days to call.

Here you go:

Good Afternoon Mr/Mrs. Doe,

My name is Sandy Moore and I interviewed for the HR Rep. position last Wednesday with your company and I just wanted wondered if a decision was made on your hire yet?

If they say no, they have not made a decision as of yet, just say:

Well, I would just like to reiterate that I am very much interested in this position and I am very excited about the possibility of being a part of your team.

If they say yes they have found someone and it was not you whom they picked, just say:

Well, Mr./Mrs. Doe, it was great interviewing with your company and I would love to renew my candidacy for any other HR position you feel I qualify for in the future!

I normally ask in the interview "when will you be making a decision, about this role".

Once that time has past - give them a call.

If you have not heard from them in a week. Or if they gave you a date that they are making a decision and it is past the date. Just simply say that you are wondering if they had made a decision and that you are still very interested in the position

Wait a couple of weeks, give them a call and say you attended an interview, and was wondering if they could give you any feedback on how you interviewed.
