Also for a centralized army and economy, both integral parts of a working country. Without the centralized economy and army the States would have evolved much differently from how they did, and not only would we be a mess - much like the newly independant fractions of the late USSR - but we would not have had the influence or push in multinational wars.

In order to protect themselves and strengthen their productivity, the states willingly gave power to a centralized National government.

Actually, the newly independent states didn't have a centralized government.

The articles of confederation was a very minimal framework between the 13 existing states; it's lack of centralization caused innumerable problems & endless disputes between the states. The constitution with its clearly centralized arrangement & delegation of powers to the federal goverment, states & people was in part a response to this failed, temporary setup.

Really, all societies create a system for running themselves. The US wasn't seeking to be an independent group of free for alls. Just independent from someone else's government. They were seeking the right to self-rule.
