The birds would try to clean the oil from their feathers causing them to ingest some. Oil is toxic, so it poisoned them besically. Birds taht wern't lucky with the poisoning died of hunger or thurst because they couldn't fly or hunt for food.

They were covered in the crude oil and died. The oil isn't good for the birds, If it isn't removed from their feathers they die. It is hard to hear but it is the truth and sometimes it hurts.
