I would suggest Edgar Allen Poe by Milton Meltzer as a biography of Poe. For a more complex biography perhaps Edgar Allan Poe: A Critical Biogray by Arthur Hobson Quinn.

To begin a search on any author first go to Yahoo and then just type in the authors name. There will be many results, look for web sites sponsored by universities, museums, and other professional organizations. These may help:
www.eapoe
www.poemuseum.org
www.knowingpoe.thinkport.org

Check your local library as well. Most now have public computers where you can look up the libraries resources on the author, also, you will find website availability to library archives. You can get some really good info there. Also, you can get details that may not be found on the regular websites and this will impress your teachers/professors.

I have read all of Poe's works, as well as having read many biographies on him. There are many websites which I have seen, but the best, most thorough by far it this one:

http://www.lfchosting.com/eapoe/

And here is the best biography of the great poet I have ever come across, truly great and insightful:

Edgar Allen Poe: His Life and Legacy by Jeffrey Meyers

You can buy a used copy for not too much here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0684193701/sr=8-1/qid=1159929674/ref=sr_1_1/104-2514472-7575929?ie=UTF8&s=books

And just as a side, check out this mp3 I found. It is a song for piano and soprano by Nathan Shirley, set to "The Lake" by Poe.
Very cool:

Click on 'listen to mp3'

Hope that helps!

I am always interested to know how people who can't find the yahoo search and type in "Edgar Allan Poe" can set up a yahoo account and find their way here in the first place.

Fascinating.
