I fear, however, that as we celebrate "Hug a Hoodie" day, the hoodies will be celebrating "Beat The Cr*p Out Of The General Public" day; and that can only lead to chaos.

It's a great idea and one that appeals to the general public's sense of responsibility and community. I just have one problem with it: it gives the public a sense of achievement without actually solving very much at all. So you've hugged a hoodie: now what? Does it suddenly change a hoodie's reality or the reason they became a hoodie in the first place? Is it likely to stop muggings and teen violence? I doubt it.
I reckon if you're willing to hug a hoodie, you should be willing to contribute a few pounds to a community project working with hoodies.

No thank you, I would not hug a hoodie for fear of been assaulted or maimed, if we have to have a crazy day like that then I would rather it be 'hug a tree day' at least they don't swear or assault you.

I wouldnt hug them to celebrate anyway....you'd either be left minus your purse or with a stab wound.
We could celebrate it by wearing hoods too then they wouldnt stand out so much and would have to revert to another fashion trend.

ewww no. hoodies usually smell bad. maybe they should just get loads of dorks and grannies to parade the streets in hoodies so it wouldn't be cool anymore.
