It is a list of things, not any one policy or event. Everything contributed to it, from the expansionist/imperialist thinking of the 19th century to the capitalist environment fomented by the government to the individual liberties and guarantees of the citizens. Even the militaristic/competitive attitude of this and the last century has influenced/lead the nation on the path to were it is today.
The basic tenant has been a consistent policy throughout the centuries. It really doesn't matter much what policies any one nation engages in, but it is imperative that those policies are consistent through time. Most of the rest of the world (except Europe) has policies that start and end in less than a decade, then a new direction is taken, only to have that end and embark in yet another direction. That is a recipe for disaster. Consistency is the key to success.

Economic Freedom, basically...
The freedom for anyone to basically have equal economic rights, based on what skills they have.
The ability to move on up out of the bottom tier of economics without bias if you work hard enough at it.
The ability to do whatever you deem fit to do as long as you can do it.
I'm from the US, but this is the same system that keeps most of those "developed nations" in check. Freedom to do whatever you want to do as long as you have the ability to do it without compromising others' freedoms.

It's not a secret. It's called Freedom.
Free people working for themselves, and keeping what they have earned. It works everywhere its tried. Just like socialism fails everywhere its tried, and fails to the extent that it is implemented.
