with a lot of practice. Giotto apparently used to be able to draw a near perfect circle freehand, its considered a great skill.

relax your arm, try to do it in one smooth flowing action, with time you should be able to do it.

failing that though, does it have to be freehand? there are Helix templates for loads of different ovals

If you are drawing an actual oval, then you want to draw 2 half circles with straight lines inbetween (like a race track) A good way to do this is to lightly draw a full circle at each end, then connect the 2 circles and erase the interior portions of the original circles.

try tilt a cup so the top looks like a oval- it isn't egg shaped, more squished circle, first hold pencil and pretend to draw it in air to get used to the flow of the hand, then draw onto paper.

Make a loop of string. Put two pins in the paper, (you need a cork board underneath it), then lay the string on the paper so that the two pins are inside the loop. Put the pencil inside the loop, and pull it tight against the pins. Now slowly move the pencil around the loop, keeping the string tight against the pins.
The further apart the pins are, the tighter will be your oval!

Place two thumbtacks in the paper (these will be the foci), put a loop of string over them, put your pencil on the inside of the string, and draw in a circular path. The farther the thumbtacks are from each other, the more oblong the oval. Of course, if you don't want holes in your paper, you could get someone else to hold two pencils in place while you draw.

I always had trouble with this,I took the advice of my teacher, relax your hand and dont lean your hand on the table, hang your hand in the air and draw a circle while moving your arm up and down the page, don't be afraid to draw more than 1 line, you can rub out the lines you dont want. Also, practise doesn't hurt anyone!

In one movement - drawing it as two halves means that you will lose the roundness of it - it will turn out as a convex lens otherwise.
