Hello,

I'm using Windows 98 (I know, I know...) and I recently tried to install some software for an MP3 player which failed - but now, for some reason, Internet Explorer 'flickers' every time I type, or hold my mouse arrow over a link - it's ridiculous, not to mention annoying. Problem is, I don't know what was/has been installed that's made IE go nuts. Don't really want to do a software reinstall - I was wondering if there was a good/free diagnostic scan I could use to check for probs (I've tried WinDoc etc., to no avail).

All decent suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

Not to worry. Do the following to reset the IE configuration.

1. On IE, go to [Tools]>[Internet Options]. Under the tab [Programs], click on the button [Reset Web Settings].

IE should now be as good as new.

2. Ensure that all unwanted programs are being uninstalled. Go to [Control Panel]>[Add/Remove Programs]. Select the unwanted programs and uninstall them.

Hope this helps.

Still if this persist, you may want to use HijackThis at www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html.
This program is safe and is very useful in detecting what's wrong with your computer especially when it is due to spyware, malware or whatever that makes your computer go wrong.

Last but not least, make sure your Anti-Virus is up and running. Do a thorough scan to write out any virus possibility. You should be okay then....

Hope this helps.

Reinstall IE by going to add/remove programes and selecting repair. I dont know if firefox works on win 98 but firefox is a cool free web browser that is better than IE anyway so you might want to download that aswell.

If possible i would follow the others advice of upgrading but whatever you do dont upgrade to ME, that is worse than 98. Dont worry too much about updating if you cant afford it and your PC does what you need it for i see no reason to upgrade. If you do decide to upgrade to XP check your specs before you upgrade, I know someone who bought windows XP to upgrade from 98 and she put the disk in and because the computer was so old it did not have good enough specs to upgrade.

Personally speaking, I will advise you to do the same as I do for all my customers when I find they are still using win 98 and that is to upgrade to winXP. I actually upgrade them to XP Pro SP2. The problem with 98 is that apart from being years out of date and no longer having free security updates - opens you up to hackers, spy ware and viruses - is that it doesn't support many of the software available today. IE on the other hand has now been upgraded to IE7 which is available as a free download from www.microsoft.com but only if you have XP. No updates are available to 98 users as Microsoft has, effectively, discontinued win98 and all updates for same. Failing that of course, there are many other explorers other than IE - firefox, netscape, etc.

Firstly if you are running 98SE your PC may not have the performance to run XP.
To Nigel B- Don't wanna argue but XP pro is for use in a business domain. I.e logging onto a company network. XP home is the correct solution. By the way XP pro is a lot more expensive....

In June 2004, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team
(CERT) took the unusual step of urging PC users to use a browser--any browser--other than IE.

why keep on struggling with explorer when you can have Firefox or Niche for free?
You can get them both here:

dowload new ie6 and re install the program, but running 98 is going to create more problems, even xp will be out of date come Jan 2007 when Windows Vista is released so your 9 years behind.

Stop using IE, get off of Win '98 and use Firefox.....

Or you can just run a "repair" of IE by going to ADD/Remove Programs.

I would agree, move onto windows 2000 or XP, it won't be long before Windows98 is not supported anymore...if not already!
