We have pets too: two cats, two gerbils, two hamsters, one parakeet. We will keep the cats and get rid of the rest if we have to. We need to be out of our place by the end of the month. We are pulling in less than a thousand a month. What can we do?

Two possibiities:

1) Call 211 - this is the Help call center for United Way agencies. It is likely that they know of shelters or an agency that provides emergency housing ... and who knows, maybe United Way can help direct you to long-term housing.

2) Go to the Hennepin County Public Assistance office nearest you. You undoubtedly qualify for financial assistance, including housing and medical assistance. Bring with you whatever documents you may have on hand to prove your identity as well as your income and financial condition. (Any current utility bill may also be required.)

The pets may present a obstacle to your housing. Prepare yourself to leave some or all of them behind. Your own well-being should come first.

I hope this helps,

You might try the YMCA and see if they have facilities, but the pets might be a problem. You should also try local churches, especially the ones with strong social service traditions.

Unfortunately, you should let the Humane Society take your pets. I know that's hard and it's close to all you have, but you have to be practical about your own survival right now.

I'm sorry for your situation.

You gotta dump the pets...when you make more money then you can afford to own pets and have enough choice in housing to keep them.

Check out a local housing agency or authority that may provide housing assistance.
