For idiots that don't understand, this guy makes a good point: you CAN hear things in the real world when you are asleep (e.g. TV in the backround providing voices, alarm clock can affect dreams before you wake up etc.), you can FEEL things in the real world when you are asleep (e.g. if someone tickles you when you are sleeping, that will probably be reflected somehow in your dreams), so if you slept with your eyes open and someone flashed a bright green light in your face, would you see green in your dreams?

Going to sleep shuts down our senses to a minimum. Therefore, we don't hear everything but if the are loud noises or emergency sounds we will wake up and then hear them.
We don't see anything for the same reason but if there are sudden bright lights, for example, lightning, then the chances are that we will wake up.
Same with touch, if something that we don't recognise touches us then we will waken, smell - for example smoke, we will waken (hopefully in time) and even with taste, as we often 'taste' smells.
The eyelid is there to protect the eye - not to stop you from seeing.

No because when you sleep you are in a different state of consciousness, so the brain wouldn't deal with the info coming through the eyes...so you wouldn't SEE in the real sense of the word!

Do your eyeballs not roll back into the socket when you fall asleep? If so, it would only be the whites of your eyes that were on show and so you wouldn't be able to see anything

No not really..

when you sleep your mind is slightly closed off to actual events.. but more suseptable to your subconscious...

there may be cases where it is possible.. but i aint never heard of any!
