There is an answer that they are a drain on the system...what???? They are self-sufficient, they raise their own crops, they do pay taxes for their property and they do pay for their medical care, they pay cash...hospitals like getting the Amish patients, no insurance BS to deal with.
The Amish help each other, that's what a community is, if a person's house or barn burns down, the community comes together to help build it back. They believe in helping each other. And they will do they same to help each other through this crisis and their faith will make them strong.
I think that if someone wants to make comments about them, they need to get their facts straight. They do not use food stamps. They earn money by selling the goods they have, quilts, milk, eggs, furniture, etc.
If you have an Amish for a friend, you have a friend for life.

Actually the Amish are a fairly substantial drain on public welfare. I have nothing against them, its a fine way to live, just don't think your tax dollars are not used to help them. They usually have enough to eat but if they don't we'll help them. They often use medical services and they never pay for them. If they are hospitalized your taxes pay for it all. They do not believe in birth control or not having children in any way for any reason. One couple carried a terminal disease that was dominant and had 5 children all of whom died slowly in our ICU. This is expensive not to mention a little horrifying. The Amish are not perfect. They do not pay into the system so technically they are a drain on the system. Now I like Amish people and I think we should all have free public health care but since we don't we can't say that they are not getting services from Uncle Sam. They get plenty.

I think you are right. I think they eat healthy fresh home grown foods. There are no preservatives, nothing added, and no crazy hormones in their meat. I dont think they would hav the need for government assisted programs they are pretty self suffient in their own community and can probably make a lot out of a little.

It would be difficult to fault the Amish life style on moral grounds, wouldn't it?

Let me get this straight, your watching this unfold, another school shooting, and all you can think about is why there are no overweight kids. Good lord. I can only assume your not trying to be insensitive but that is the impression I get. As for who called 911, its being reported that neighbors heard gun shots.

they don't have welfare, or food stamps, cause they don't use money, they are not fat, cause they work. They are AMISH, maybe we should just go back to the old days, and have no medicine, or anything, just stick our hands in horse's butts, and be an amish mecianic

I so agree with JD. What is the importance of your question in a case like this? My prayers go out to the family and community.
