Search for question : how do you adjust the valves
on a yamaha fz 1?
Turn the crankshaft to TDC of the compression stroke of the cyl you're checking.

My first suggestion is to get a shop manual. It's going to tell you torque settings you will need to loosen the valve train, mic it, then tighten it again.

but from my experience you set the intake valves by getting the piston to top dead center of the power stroke. Mic the valve clearance according to manufacturer's specs.

Same for exhaust valves but top dead center of the exhaust stroke.

You better know what you are doing before you start though, unless you like bent valves. It's sometimes worth it to take it in. Your mechanic is insured!!!
