Yeah it needs to be replaced. Just make sure that your new drive is compatible with your system. You don't want to come home with your new drive only to find out that it won't work on your system.

You'll have to get another drive. Wal-mart has them. If you don't have a DVD burner, get one of those. Set the jumper to the "master" position on the drive, if this is your only drive. If it is a second drive, set the jumper the same as the one you removed. DVD burners will play and burn all types Cd's and DVDs making them more versatile than a Cd-ROM.

replace the whole drive they only cost about $15 in most stores. Besides, the tray is timed and its very difficult to do.
