Hi good people,
My husband is an ecologist / biodiversity postdoctoral researcher and his current contract runs out shortly. He has been sending out his cv is not getting any job interviews. Ideally he would love to get a lectureship or if not another post doc / research position. He will also consider becoming a ecological or environmental consultant.

He needs a cv and covering letter surgery as his current ones dont even land him any interviews. Can anybody out there recommend a cv writing and career / skill assesment service aimed at scientific / academic researchers.
There are a lot of cv etc writing services out there but it would be great to know of one particulalry aimed at people in his position.

Please do not hesitate to ask me for any further clarification.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions that you might have.

I run a company that does that (I'm in Canada but I have clients all over the world). If interested, please send me an email.

My experience (recent after redundancy) of CV and covering letter is getting me a number of interviews - no job yet tho!
The basic premise of a CV is to give initial personal and contact details and information re qualifications, present and past experience, present and future aspirations - whether you're applying for a professional post or a saturday job.....
Basic CV layout:
Name/Address/Tel no/ email/ fax no. - set out like a letter head.
short paragraph about self - ie 'a confident and focussed individual self-developed through drive and perseverence...'. continuing into a brief outline of what you are like (the assets of your personality and experience) and what you are looking for as an employment aspiration, such as .....'Ideally seeking a lectureship position but would consider another post doc / research position. Would also consider a consultancy in ecologogy or environment;......
Next a separate sheet briefly detailing current and previous employment (in reverse chronological order), including also any further additional/voluntary work undertaken in other areas. Then a separate sheet briefly detailing education and training and qualifications (again most recent first) to include further inhouse professional development training, courses undertaken.
lastly a sheet setting out a personal statement - which is where most people let themselves down (myself included until recent revision) - this can be written (typed preferred) which is worded and directed to specifically, positively address all the aspects of the job applied for - making special indication of your assets as benefit to that job. It is an imperative that each PS is written (or amended) to specifically address each job applied for - there is no such thing as a set or standard Personal statement.

Most employers don't have all day to read each and every CV/application that comes in - so they often only choose the ones that are appealing in presentation and most informative, in the briefest of wordings. The CV itself should be presentated at its best - a laminate sheet on the front and a backing sheet on the back, all held together as a ring or binder edge.
Lastly, inspite of the above (which is my own personal experience) - perhaps your husband might find it advantageous to speak with/take advice from a college or university careers department where graduates are trained in his field of work - after all someone must be advising them on how best to present themselves via a CV. I don't believe anyone would be reluctant to help.
