Theodore Roosevelt had some interesting things to say about patriotism and the ability to criticize the president that Republicans today might want to take to heart. Here it is:
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, 'right' or 'wrong', is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

It just means they haven't been able to live up to the standards they once set for themselves.
Oh, and Jefferson's party eventually became the Democratic Party. The Republican party of his time (now generally called "Democratic-Republicans") is not the same as the Republican party of today. Here's the quote: "Martin Van Buren wrote in his 'Inquiry Into the Origin and Course of Political Parties in the United States' that the party's name had changed from Republican to Democratic and that Jefferson was the founder of the party."
So, only two of them are Republicans. Lincoln would NOT be a Republican today by any means if you look at his policies, and it is unlikely that Roosevelt, with his Environmentalism and claiming of land for Federal Parks, would be identified as Republican either.
If there were still Republicans like that, I might actually vote Republican. Since you guys seem to think Bush is somehow good for the country, I can't trust you to know what's good for the country.

humm...perhaps if you did more research you would actually find out that in the time of those presidents, the republican party's beliefs and values were that of which we now call the democratic party. it wasn't until after that we ended up with a two party system and the republican party's members becaame democrat and republicans went down the crapper. do some research before you open your mouth.

Washington and Jefferson can't really be categorized by reference to our modern political parties.
