I think the sad reality is that many do not really realize that they are socialists. Many of them are simply young and do not realize some of the unpleasant realities of life such as equal opportunity does not mean equal outcome or that feelings of goodwill will not necessarily keep insane fanatics from wanting to do you harm.

Others (particularly liberal politicians or very wealthy liberals like George Soros or Barbara Streisand) know full well what they are supporting but would probably be insulted if you told them it was socialism. Most of them I believe are elitists who truly believe that they are endowed with a broader vision than the rest of us and believe it to be their right/destiny/divine mission to supervise and direct large organizations that will "protect" the rest of us filthy masses from cradle to grave.

Because they honestly think that if you throw enough money at "the people" (taken from all those evil well-off high producing folks) that we will FINALLY achieve this utopian society that they dream about.

They don't recognize all the past (& present) failures of Marxist governments. To them, these people didn't go far enough to achieve communism.
My problem with communism/Marxism/socialism, is that it has to be governed by somebody to work, and everyone has to agree to it (which never happens, so those people must be locked up or murdered).
The same scumballs that leftists think are screwing us now under capitalism, just go where the money & power are; the government, only then they're able to do even MORE screwing of everyone, because they have control of all the laws and the military.

The way I put it to my liberal friends is, "Imagine Wal-Mart with their own military to FORCE you to shop there. "
This is what actually happens with socialism, regardless of how rosy the "theory" sounds.

The current conservative leadership in the US takes criticism for coming up with a policy on various issues and trying to implement them. While I don't agree with all of their policies, I appreciate the fact that they are taking a stand. Also I can guess what action they will take in the future. What is the current crop of Dems saying their policies will be? So far all I hear is that they are "anti-Bush" or that they will "do it different then Bush" or other unprintable remarks. I guess this is the type of thing that appeals to their base constituents. Which based off of the comments I have seen here, appears to be a correct generalization.

There are no new ideas, not conservative nor liberal. All the ideas we have in the political arena today are rebranding old ideologies. Anything genuinely new is usually seen as either divisive by the right, or too liberal by the centre (eco politics being a good case).

why can't conservatives come up with their own ideas instead of the ones fed to them by their church and intollerant parents?
