I'm not fix-it kinda guy - so I messed this one up. I used the wrong size Phillips screwdriver trying to remove a screw - and now the "+" on the screw has been completely "mushed" (for lack of a better term). I have no clue how to proceed in removing this screw. Thanks.

You could try a couple of things. First if there is enought "Head" left on the screw you could try cutting a slot in it to fit a Flathead screwdriver and try removing it that way, if that doesnt work you can drill a hole in the center of the screw then get an easy out of the proper size and use that to remove the screw.

An easy out is a reverse threaded tool that will screw into the drilled hole in the direction needed to remove the screw (counterclockwise) they come in various sizes, so what you need to know is the size drill bit used to drill the hole in the center of the screw, this should be smaller than the screw itself to avoid damaging the threads the screw is in.

Well (having not seen the screw)... You could try to 'mush' a little more of the edges out and use a flat-head screwdriver. Or (depending on what material your screw is in... don't try this on delicate materials like paneling or walls, but plain old wood or concrete is good here) take a larger Phillipshead screwdriver, and a mallet, and with a few good hard hits, create a new (albeit little) indentation at the bottom which might hold the original screwdriver in.

I also believe there is some kind of tool out there that'll fix it, but I don't know its name.

Because you are a self described non fix it kind of a guy I will give you the simplest method that is apt to work. Take a small sharp chisel and hammer . Place the chisel at the edge of the screw head and tap lightly with hammer in a counter clockwise direction this will probably unscrew it enough to loosen it.

They have these heads that have a sharp blade that you put on your electric driver at high torque. Basically it digs out a new + thing and removes the screw. A set of pliers can also do the trick.

Very simple....Go the hardware store and ask the clerk for an "easy out". Also ask him how to use it. Very simple and works every time.
