Cheerleading involves much more than just yelling. There is usually a lot of floor gymnastics involved.

They dont just yell. It is really hard actually. I was a cheerleader for a short time. I had trouble learning all the flips and splits and jumps and all that sh**. As well as learning all the cheers. Cheer leading isn't something you can just pick up and be great at right away. It is considered a sport and i give cheerleaders mad props.

You obviously have no idea of the training cheerleaders go through to perform. When I was in high school, we ran the same distance as the football players, and we went through incredible strength training. When the guys did two-a-days, we were right out in the sun with them, and while we weren't slamming into slides or running drills, we were going over routines that you couldn't get out of your chair and perform right now.
Cheerleaders do a heck of a lot more than yell, but even if yelling and clapping is all they did in the four hours it takes to play a football game, I'd dare you to keep up with them. You wouldn't even have to attempt a stunt or run down the field to cheer as someone heads for the endzone. JUST STAND THERE and yell for four hours. YOU couldn't do it.

depends on what you mean by sport. many cheerleading situations include significant tumbling, gymnastics, team activities such as balance in building towers, significant coordination in terms of coreography and dance and coordination, not to mention the psychology of uniting and motivating the crowd. There is significant physical and other skills required. What qualifies as a "sport" is a matter of simply discussing what the word "sport:" means. You can check a dictionary. But it does contain many of the components of a sport, including competitions, difficult physical skills and teamwork.

I'm a cheerleader, and yeah, I have to agree, cheer isn't exactly a sport, but competitive should be, since it's like dancing. But then reg. cheer consisted of many things; like you have to be strong in your arms, legs, and abs. It's tough, seriously. Personally, next to football coaches, cheer coaches are the worst.
And in places like Dallas or Kentucky, people take cheer seriously. I mean it. If you went around saying cheer isn't a sport, people would get pretty mad at you.

When the cheerleading involves competition between squads, then I believe it can be classified as a sport...it requires athletic ability and even strategy of routines.

Cheerleading is a sport.
In my state, Illinois, cheerleading was recently added to the IHSA (Illinois High School Association) list of sports.
Also, it requires a tremendous amount of athleticism, poise, flexibilty and strength. Have all of you nay-sayers actually watched a competitive squad compete? It is amazing what they are able to do.
