This may sound weird but use instant grits. Put them along the lines of your house and on any ant hills you see. They will get wet and it causes the ants to explode. It's the only thing we found that worked. We didn't want to go the chemical route due to the baby and dog. Within 2 weeks we were completely ant (even fire ant) free.

You can use cayenne pepper. Many forms of ants hate it because it sticks to thier legs and is very uncomfortable to ants. Splash wherever you see ants.
If you find the nest don't remove it. If you do they will find another location that will be more difficult to find. Call a pesticide company to remove the nest only.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.

The only way I know is to wait until night (they will all go home and out of your house) and spray the seams in your house (windows, doors, baseboards). I don't like using that stuff either. If you do it right, it will last a long time. If you wait until night, you won't have to spray all surfaces, just their means of entry.
