I advise to avoid anything in the area West of 19th Avenue & South of Camelback. That whole SW region is not good. Best areas are Scottsdale & Ahwatukee but both are quite expensive for housing as well. Chandler can be good but varies by specific area, same with Mesa. Deer Valley is one of the nicest central areas with decent schools. You'll see the best housing prices in QueenCreek, Surprise, El Mirage, Anthem, BUT this is because they are Sooooo far out you will spend all your time (and gas money) commuting on horribly inadequate freeways. Arizona has an open enrollment policy for schools, so you can enroll your kids in a different school than the one in your home's assigned district if you want.

Craigslist Phoenix is also good for finding rentals. I'd recommend starting with the Deer Valley area for good prices & schools. You can also view crime statistics on the Phoenix Police Dept website.

Arizona is a really big state with a lot of diverse climates, populations, etc. If you like cooler climate, Flagstaff, Prescott, or Payson are pretty (as are Show Low and Cottonwood). Tucson is a bigger city, a little cooler in temp than Phoenix and has a different feel. It is a University town but it also has embraced it's desert roots more than Phoenix. You will see less green grass and they don't have much after dark lighting (to cut on light pollution). It is also harder to drive in because they don't have a cross-town freeway system. It is quite pretty and has some fun community things they do.

We live in Phoenix and this is the biggest city in the state, close to the hottest (not as hot as Yuma or Bullhead City). It is very urban, but has lots of green grass and also desert preserve in the center of town. I don't know rental costs in anywhere else but Phoenix and even in town it will vary. I'd budget around $1000/month for a rental. Scottsdale has a well-known school system (but is an expensive place to live). If you find a good place to move but don't like the schools, you can check out charter schools which are free. My friend's daughter has just started at North High School (public h.s.) at 12th St & Thomas in their International Baccelauriate program. The student has to qualify to get in and there are high academic standards (language study, etc.). You don't have to live in the neighborhood to go to the school. Alhambra Traditional Elementary has a good reputation although it is not in a great neighborhood itself.

Stay away from the south side of Phoenix, and the Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler Areas are the
best..Schools are good, and very safe..The price of rent depends on what kind of apartment or home you want to rent..The better places almost a thousand a month, the cheaper six hundred to eight hundred a month..Also depends what area you rent in..Some places the property value is very cheap..Should find a nice safe area where you won't have trouble in..

honestly, if you are looking to live there, think about the towns of Chandler, parts of Glendale and Scottsdale. Not all parts are extremely expensive and they are safer than some of the other cities. I can tell you from experience that I lived in Mesa for a while and I have had so many bad times with crime. I had my apartment broken into a few times, my car vandalized and had a stalker, so to be honest, I would avoid that town.
