They have become quite dull and rusty. Bought a special cleaning cloth for them but only kept them nice for a day. Any suggestions?

If you examine them more closely you will probably find some cracks in the cast surface, this means that they are past their useful life, you can get replacements but this type of hotplate is quite expensive, also there are 3 or 4 sizes. It would be more sensible to replace the hob.

Ha ha, your British! In America, a "hob" is a range or cook top. The heating rings you refer to getting dull is a common problem, without much you can do about them, except to polish them with your special cleaning cloth when they get dull. If you try to coat them with something, it will cause you trouble when you have to use them.

Hi>
I use halogen hobs, again solid items.
As good as gas, and mind your fingers.
