I think this movie has permanently made me scared of monkeys. i didn't realize my monkey phobia until I was in the monkey house at the zoo, and had a panic attack. So embarrassing

The movie was produced by MGM in 1939. As far as when the fictional story took place, it was written at the time to reflect present day imagination.

The movie was made in 1939 but the book was published in 1900. I'd say it's contempoary to that.
