Both are fine options. I felt that a bassinet was a good option in the beginning when they wake up all the time. You can put the bassinet right next to you and comfort the baby without having to get up. Also when babies are newborn the are used to being all cozy in utero so the smaller dimensions of a bassinet can be comforting. There is nothing wrong, however, with going straight to the crib.

Lots of people use the bassinet as a day bed for baby esp if baby's room is upstairs. I think if you have room and dont need a day bed then a crib is better cause it will last for sooo much longer but if space or money is a problem then a bassinet will work until baby starts to sit up.

depends on where baby is sleeping...some mom's like bassinets in the living room durring the day, so they can keep an eye and ear out...
but babies grow so fast, that sometimes bassinets only last about a month or 2...
and bassinets can be pulled around the room to stay with mom, even at night, it can be pulled right up to the bed.

first 6 weeks, the bassinet can be right next to you in your bedroom, or out in living room while your cooking, notice I didn't say in the kitchen, way to dangerous, for the little joy of bundle to be there, later baby can be moved to there own room with a baby monitor

It depends on what you like. Personally I liked bassinetts the first couple months because you can take them with you to the bedroom (to sleep by your bed) and living room (to watch TV) or in the dinning room (to cook dinner cuz you know that the only free time you have is when that baby is sleeping!). I liked knowing I didn't have to be so far away from her. It eased my mind.

I'd go to a crib that converts because you get more years of use out of it.

If you are considering buying a pack and play (playpen) you can use that til they get older.
