When laptop has been in use for 2 - 3 hours it always crashes.
Any ideas why this should be?

Please note that I have 1024 MB, and 60 GB, surely this is enough memory?
It is an almost new laptop.

Last time this happened I was on a film site, and each page led to another and another, and I did end up with a number of pages running at the same time.
Could this have something to do with it?

Could be any number of reasons, some of which have been covered above.
What are you doing when it crashes?
Typing into Word, browsing the web, playing a game etc etc?
Does it crash if you just leave it alone with a screensaver active?
Do you have a scheduled task that runs every once in a while, like a backup to external drive?
Please be more specific when asking computer questions.
Your question is similar to asking a car based question like "Why won't my car start?" As you know, there can be many reasons!
OK, thanks for the further info.
It depends on exactly how many web pages / instances of IE you had open / running concurrently.
The machine probably either ran out of available memory, IE had a fatal crash or explorer.exe crashed. The last 2 usually happen when the web site concerned tries to do something naughty, like forcing a trojan or spyware download & installation.
Make sure you have all Windows Updates installed, check by visiting Windows Update.
Do you have antivirus and spyware detection installed and working?

Low memory! You either don't have enought memory, or you are running several programs that take up too much memory.
In a Windows based system, once you open a program it takes up memory and then hangs on to it and does not release. This will make other programs after a few hours try to latch on to memory that others won't give up.
In my opinion, add more memory, or have a professional remove a lot of the junk that starts up with windows. This will not only remove your crashing problem, it will also make it run faster.
Otherwise, reboot often.

Overheating ! Be sure not to cover the air intake vents while using your laptop. It should be used on a hard flat surface, not on your bed, the carpet or your lap. You might try a vacume over the air intake as they do clog with lint over time. Don't try & suck it's brains out, a couple quick passes should to it. good luck
