How to put php onto my website.?

Every time I try to put php onto a page, and name it .php, all that I see is code on the preview window. How can I put php into a website since I am not very knowledgeable about php scipting.

does your web host allow php support? if you're using a free web hosting service, most of the time they do not support php scripting.

are you putting php tags? Starting tags look like . So an example PHP website would look like this:
