The innovation in agriculture are in the areas of plant genetics, farming, and the processing of plant products.

Genetics: Corn with leaves that are straight instead of bent in the middle, lets more light into plant. (corn is probably the most engineered crop) Other genetics innovation is adding genes for production of chemicals and medecines by plants.

Farming: Using GPS and micro soil analysis to apply fertilizers only where needed.

Processing: New energy fuels and plastics from plant materials.

Personal favorite: Engineering plants to selectively remove metals from soil. This is being done mostly to remediate contaminated areas. But there is another interesting application: In the southwest, several ounces of gold are distributed in every acre of soil. An engineered plant could "harvest" these metals.

it's not all that new but still coming into its' own. remote sensing is what it's called. they have cameras that are sensitive to light we can not see. you can photograph fields of agriculture (plants) and detect stress to the plant before it is visible to our eyes. the farmer then goes to that area and determines what is wrong.
there was a veteranarian the used plant data to somehow diagnois antrax in cattle. i don't remeber how he did it but his name is dr martin hugh jones and he works at the louisiana state university vet school. my father, also a professor worked with him. i know him too and i'm sure he would be glad to tell you about it.
