Crime statistics have always been a bone of contention as it all depends on which side of the fence you are sitting. The police can only produce statistics about crimes they know about. Non-police researchers produce totally different results as they produce records of people against whom a crime has been committed - whether or not it is reported to police. The fact that a person claims a crime has been committed does not mean that in fact it was. It may be a civil dispute. Over the past twenty years the number of rape cases reported in the UK has increased enormously. The police claim that it is because of the change in dealing with the victims. The researchers claim that it is an increase in the incidence of the offense. No-one wins in the end. The only true statistic, as I see it, is how many crimes have been reported to police, how many have been accepted by them as a crime and how many have been successfully investigated. All other information on alleged crime is flawed...................

indeed. Sociologists should also take into account that crime statistics are not always accurate at all. The only 2 statistics that are closest to the truth are murder (there is a body) and car theft (for insurance purposes).
