Last week I had to buy a new washer too. We chose the Whirlpool Duet Sport and I LOVE it! It's a front loading machine so it cost a little more. We bought the dryer to match. I did laundry yesterday and for the first time ever, my dryer was done before the washer! I didn't have to wait for the dryer to finish. I didn't mind doing laundry since it was so easy.

You did not say if money were an object, but I will assume so. When we bought our first house money was an object. We went down to Sears. The salesman talked us into a low impact Kenmore. ( by low impact- I mean not the best, not the worst-not the most expensive not the cheapest either). Anyway we have had the pair for ten years now and their still going strong. I would highly recommend Kenmore. We have not had any problems at all with ours. Good luck, and happy hunting!

Get the biggest capacity you can.

I personally have been happy with my "Super Capacity" Whirlpool. It lasted nearly twenty years. Fairly inexpensive for 3.2 cubic feet. If you need more than that, its a bit of a jump in price.

By the way, Whirlpool is the actual manufacturer of many of Sears' Kenmore line of washers.

General Electric is pretty good, I have a top loader ( top loaders last longer I believe). I have had this one for several years now and it is still in good shape.

buy energy star ones, whirlpool is rugged, buy it from your local mom and pop appliance store, ask them about specials, they may try to get rid of old models
