There are approximately 100 plays run in an average football game. There is 60 mintues of playing time. There is a 45 second clock to run the next play. If they run a play every 20 seconds, that would consume 2000 seconds just to get the play off. That leaves 26 minutes of actual playing time or 1600 seconds. Doing the math, that comes out to about 16 seconds per play. This is all based on assumptions of course, and some plays will be run in more/less than 20 seconds and take longer than 16.

There are four fifteen minute quarters at the collegiate and professional levels.
However, if you deduct time spent in huddles, by the quarterback going through his progressions, etc., then the time spent while plays are running is much less than sixty minutes.
On average, there are a total of 150 plays run by both teams, (a slightly higher amount for passing teams, and considerably lower total number for running teams) times an average of 8 seconds per play, for a total of twenty minutes of actual play time!! Time spent while the quarterback waits for the coach to send in the play, then calls the play in the huddle, then brings his team to line up, then looks over the defense, and perhaps calling an audible, really adds up!!
Finally, the halftime break and the team's timeouts and the official's timeouts and the TV timeouts ( phew ) all add up to approximately 3 hours from kickoff til the final second ticks off the clock!

I don't see the point of your rant. I, and many of us, are not trying to force our sport down your throat. Football is the name of our sport so live with it. They can call football donkey nuts for all I care. It doesn't friggin' matter bro. BTW, not every sport is named exactly as it is played. Why is Rugby called Rugby. Also, WTF is Cricket? There are no crickets in Cricket. What you think is the most popular sport in the world does not need to be the same in the US. We love our Football and it is our culture. Pussy sport? I don't see any soccer players getting their spleens ripped out from a tackle. The reason they wear protective equipment is so they can endure the physically hard hits they take consistently. Many Rugby players say that the way Football (our football) is played too wrecklessly. In other words, it is more violently physical. Therfore the protective gear is a necessity. Even without pads, a football team would rip your soccer players heads off. Lastly, many of the few people who rant like this only do it because they are, for some reason, jealous of Americans. I don't see how you could be so disrespectful and hateful of Americans considering that if it was for us Americans, you would be speaking German lead by a dictatership of Hitler offsprings. Be thankful we liberated you. Thumbs up to those who agree.

Regulation is 60 minutes. If the game goes into overtime then it can vary. In OT, play stops after first score, but other than that is played as a regular 15 minute quarter.
