vice, speaker of the house, ... so on and so on

The line of succession is currently:

Vice President
Speaker of the House
President Pro Tempore of the Senate
Secretary of State
Secretary of the Treasury
Secretary of Defense
Attorney General
Secretary of the Interior
Secretary of Agriculture
Secretary of Commerce
Secretary of Labor
Secretary of Health and Human Services
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
Secretary of Transportation
Secretary of Energy
Secretary of Education
Secretary of Veterans Affairs

The current appointments to the positions of Secretary of Commerce and Labor are not qualified to assume the position of president and are not in the current line of succession.

There are other orders of succession that come into play under different scenarios (non-death of the president, decapitation of the government, is the nation at war at the time of the succession, etc.). Your question is the simple, clean idea of succession where the president dies in office and there are no additional complicating factors.

Note: Homeland Security Secretary is NOT currently part of the chain of succession.

Chris J is right. There was a suggestion by some Democrats to quickly impeach Nixon while there was a vacancy in the vice presidency in 1973 so the Democrat Speaker of the House Carl Albert could become president. However Albert did not want the job and discouraged them.
