Depends on how you interpret the question...

If you mean each brick weighs (a pound and a half) a brick:

1 brick = 1.5 lbs
1.5 bricks = 1.5 * 1.5 lbs = 2.25 lbs.

The answer is 2 1/4 lbs.

Alternatively, if you mean that each brick weighs 1 lb. + (half a brick), then each brick weighs 2 lbs.

x = 1 + x/2
x/2 = 1
x = 2

1.5x = (1.5)2
1.5x = 3

So 1.5 bricks would weigh 3 lbs.

I think this is intended as a 'trick' question, so I'm going to go with 3 pounds.

I would say 3 pounds

1 Brick = 1 pound + 1/2 Brick

so double everything and you get

2 Bricks = 2 pounds + 1 Brick

then take off 1 Brick from each side of the equation:

1 Brick = 2 pounds

So 1 and 1/2 Bricks = 3 pounds

Let the weight of a brick be b.
b = 1 + (1/2)b
b - (1/2)b = 1
(1/2)b = 1
b = 2 pounds

So 1 1/2 bricks weigh 2 x 1 1/2 = 3 pounds

1 lb + 1/2 b + 1/2 lb + 1/4 b
They weigh three quarters of a brick and 1 and a half pounds.

There's probably an iterative way of doing this. hang on.

1/2b = 1/2 lb + 1/4b
1/4b = 1/4 lb + 1/8b
etc.

So, if weight of one brick = W
W = (1+1/2+1/4+1/8 +1/16+1/32+...+1/2^n)lbs=2 as n-->infinity.
So, 1 brick weighs 2 lbs.
So one and a half bricks weigh 3 lbs.

This also works if you use 3/4 bricks + 3/2 lbs = 3/4 x 2 + 3/2 lbs = 3/2 +3/2 = 3 lbs.

One can solve this problem using algebra:

1 brick = 1pound + 1/2 brick
re-arrange to give 3/2 bricks = 1 pound
1 brick = 2/3 pounds

ans = 1 1/2 pound and 3/4 of a brick.

i.e.
* one brick = 1 pound + 1/2 brick
* therefore one and a half bricks = 1.5 times one brick

* 1.5 times 1 pound = 1 1/2 pound
* + 1.5 tmes 1/2 brick = 3/4 of a brick

* ans = total of above which is 1 1/2 pound and 3/4 bricks

Let P=Pound
B=brick
Then B=P + 1/2B
So P=1/2B
and a brick weighs 2P

A brick and a half must therefore weigh 3 pounds

1brick = 1pound + 1/2 brick

-1/2brick

1/2 brick = 1 pound

times 2

1 brick = 2 pounds

therefore 1.5 bricks = 3 pounds

If one brick (x) weighs one pound and a half brick (1/2x).

x = 1 + 1/2 x
1/2 x = 1
x=2

So one and a half x = 3

simple!
