It's an old standard. I had to go sign up when I was 18. it's the law, but just because girls can have kids, doesn't mean they should not be afforded the same rights. Girls should be required to register w/ selective service. that law was made back when women weren't even allowed in the military for anything but nursing. but now since they can hold any position a Man can, they should be required to register.
I guess the original wisdom in the law was that men could go fight to protect the women and home, and the women could stay home and be pregnant and repopulate our country. is that stupid?? Well in WWII there were so man people fighting and killed and the "war effort" affected everyone, even to the point that they had to make pennies out of steel because copper was getting scarce. everyone knew someone who was killed in the war, not just like today when everyone knows someone who's in Iraq. So in a prolongened conflict say 15 years where perhaps half our population might be killed off, would it be a good idea to keep more women home so we could concievably continue to raise more kids to fight? To take this idea furthor, what if perhaps we got into a fight w/ a neighboring planet (I know none are a threat, but say mars attacked) and our planets fought for years, it could concievably mean that to ensure our race as humanity, might depend on the reproductive capacity of our women, were we ever to come down to a war of attrition...
Barring that, I still believe women should be required to register, and if they aren't, they should still have the right to register if they feel like it.

I agree with you (American, Male by the way). I'm all for equality, but I've often heard the argument from women that they shouldn't be held to the same standard when it comes to Selective Service or the Draft. To me, that's encouraging a double standard. I also feel that men should be allowed to stay home with their children if it works out better for the family. Let's be equal, not equal when it's convenient.

Women should NOT be drafted nor in combat for the following reasons:
1) If all adults are on the battlefield, no one is minding the children or the homeland.
2) Men would become overly protective of the women, especially if a relationship begins, and be distracted from tasks at hand.
3) If bunked together the men and women would be prone to sex. This would, undoubtedly, lead to unwanted pregnancies and coat-hanger abortions.
4) Funding would increase dramatically.
5) If a man is captured he is prone to physical abuse and death. If a woman is captured she is prone to physical abuse, death, and rape, (even gang rapes).
6) One man can impregnate many women, but one women can only be impregnated once at a time. A diminishing of women would mean a diminishing of population.
7) Men can go months without sickness, but women are guaranteed to be ill, at least, once a month. The higher percentage of women in the force, the less reliable the health of the force is.
Many nations have, at one time, allowed women in combat. All but Israel have banned this for the listed reasons and more.
