"Hello Michael S!
Boy, there have been so many Politicians convicted for crimes and lies that it's hard to trust any of them. Those whom we elect are supposed to represent their constituents, and I, for one, look very closely at what my representative does by looking at his voting records often. Even though I've had a good relationship with mine, some feel slighted by him. By the statistics I've acquired, my rep. listens to his constituents about 85% of the time and votes his own agenda about 15% of the time. Not too bad. Although he might have lied to some of his voters, there are no written records that reflect a flagrant bias in any of his comments or actions (I guess he covers his tracks well) and no one has claimed to have heard a lie from him. My district probably has one of the good ones ... nothing at all like Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Illinois or Louisiana. Man, have they got losers!
I think most of us feel the same way. Not a whole lot we can do except vote them out of office if the FBI can't get them first.
With some of the PACs I support, we've been able to vote many of them out of office. It was pure pleasure! Took lots of work, but, we did it! I would hope that everybody gets behind organizations like "Citizens Against Government Waste" and others, to make a significant contribution to their Country by "forcing" our politicians to toe the line of righteousness or go to jail or get voted out.
One of the latest, and highly significant legislations is the bill on Government Transparency. Any of us can go to their website and find out who gets awarded the billions that the government contracts for. No more hiding of the awards for contracts is a wonderful piece of legislation and has many of our representatives a little frightened because now, the public can see when they vote only in their self-interest and nail them for it.
Please be one of us. Please be concerned, you can make a difference ... please participate! It can start by you and me getting together as yahooanswers buddys. Contact me if you feel like making a difference."

As a general rule I do not believe that people vote for liars and crooks. If they do it will not be because they support these views, but rather because they are uninformed. Most people are honest, intelligent and law-abiding. They expect the same in return from their leaders, but don't always get it. . However, it should also be noted that politics is nasty business and often times these labels are placed on people by the opposition in attempt to discredit their opinions or platforms. It would be misguided to vote for anyone convicted of a crime. In absence of a conviction though it is hearsay.

Well...if California is any example, yes the politicians are crooks but the people voting for them are simply idiots.

Tough question. There is no easy answer.
Unfortunately sometimes I think it comes down to the lesser of two evils.
Can you ever really "trust" a politician anyway?

No!!Sometimes, (in fact more often than not,) we have no choice. Although, if we don't vote for someone, we have no right to complain how our country is being run.
