There are some programs which can convert a video-cd .dat file into a Windows Movie Maker compatible file format such as .avi or .mpg.

One is DVD Creator & Video Converter (1) which I have used to convert .ts files into .vob (DVD standard).

You can convert the file and then load the conversion into Windows Movie Maker. It's an extra step, but when it's your only choice......

There are other programs that do conversions, but this is the only one I've used.

A DAT file is NOT one of the file formats supported by Windows Movie Maker.

Supported formats for importing content
• Video files: .asf, .avi, .wmv
• Movie files: MPEG1, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2
• Audio files: .wav, .snd, .au, .aif, .aifc, .aiff
• Windows Media files: .asf, .wm, .wma, .wmv
• Still images: .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .gif
• MP3 format audio: .mp3

You will need to convert a .dat file to one of formats listed above to import content.
