Republican. Originally elected as Vice President in 1900, he assumed the Presidency in 1901 following the assassination of McKinley. He ran on the Republican ticket in 1904 and won. Altogether, he was President from 1901-1909.

He split with the Republican Party to run for an additional term in 1912, on the Progressive Party ticket (nicknamed the Bull Moose Party). However, he lost to Taft.

He was a member of the Republican party during his presidency, but he was a progressive and tried to move that party into the progressive camp. Huh. Wonder what the world would be like today if he had succeeded? Later, he made an unsuccessful third party run as a member of the Bull Moose party.

He was a pretty cool character. He was our country's greatest conservation president, as he was an avid hunter. He quickly made the connection that barren, polluted wastelands make for pretty poor hunting, and took steps to conserve our nation's wildlife. He was also in favor of government regulation of industry
