I saw a winter jacket, tried it on and it fit perfectly and I fell in love with it. I looked at the price tag...$220. That's a lot of money for me but I need a new jacket (lost weight and my old one is huge on me). Should I go back and buy it? It's on hold until the store closes today.

Generally, I pass on buying certain things unless I anticipate I may not get another opportunity to buy it elsewhere at a later date.

I was in New York once, passing through on my way home to Canada from visiting my then-girlfriend. There were some things I wanted to buy in there that I knew I couldn't get back home, and since our relationship was something of a shambles by that point, I anticipated I might not get another opportunity to buy them. With a three-hour wait for my bus to Montreal, I made a quick trip to 80th and Broadway and bought some bagels at H&H and a logo sweatshirt and baseball cap at Zabar's. As it turned out, it was my last visit to New York (we broke up a few weeks later), Zabar's doesn't ship to Canada, and while H&H does, buying their bagels from here would have been prohibitively expensive when you factor in the exchange rate ($1.60 or so per US$1 at the time) and UPS' brokerage fees.

On another occasion, I found a DVD of a movie called "Trilogy of Terror," but I decided to wait to buy it elsewhere. The DVD later went out of print and I've never seen it available anywhere. Yes, there's Amazon and Ebay, but they both require credit cards (Ebay for signup even if all you want to use is PayPal).

Are you still in the process of losing weight? If you are, and the jacket you buy this year will be too big next year, then hold off or find another jacket that's a bit more inexpensive. If you are at your goal weight, or so close that you'll still wear the same size next year, I say go for it. You're going to need a winter coat anyway. And if it fits right, it'll keep you warmer. It'll be worth the splurge!

hate to break it to you, but $220 isn't that much for a winter coat. My snowboarding jacket cost about that much, and my work coat (long wool coat) was about 150. Compare the coat to similar ones to see if its priced fairly, and start calling up other stores to see if they have the same coat, maybe for less money. If you can find it somewhere else for less, you can probably go tell the original store that you found a better deal and see if they will match the price for you.

YES!

It always makes you feel good to splurge big on yourself! One time never hurts and a coat can be considered an investment:)

I did the same thing when I lost weight but it was a Coach purse that I had been eyeing for over a year. It was my job well done gift!

Especially since you lost weight, you should treat yourself for all the hard work! Congrats on the weight loss (I know its easy) and I hope you do it!

If this was something someone very close might want for Christmas, you'd probably get it for them. What's wrong with getting yourself something nice? Don't you deserve it? Clothes say alot about the person inside them. If you wear clothes that make you feel good and confident about yourself, that transfers to the people looking at you.

When it comes to myself, I do splurge--especially if it's a leather jacket or coat. Oh, when I put on my leather motorcycle jacket, black jeans and western shoe boots, I put on an attitude. (Come to think of it, people tend to avoid me when I dress like that.)

This is going to sound awfully grown-up but these are three things that I think about when spending quite a bit of money on a single garment.

a) Practicality, will keep you warm and is it comfortable?
b) Will last for a couple of years, i.e. so that you get your money's worth out of it?
and most importantly
c) Do you look and feel fabulous?

If you can tick all these boxes then I'd go for it!

You should get it - it is hard to find a really nice coat that you can love. Plus you worked hard to lose weight.

Yes, I splurged and bought a hand made Indian tapestry - I love it - it's hanging on my wall in the living room... I can't hardly breath unless I have beautiful artwork to look at... Totally worth it!

yes. it is sometimes good to splurge on things you really like, need, or even want!
because in life you do so many things for other people and you constantly worry about things such as either school work, grades, bills you have to pay, what people think etc.
but money comes,go, and comes again so splurge this time on something you need and that is going to make you feel good.

well depends on if you are adding another $220 to a huge ever increasing debt....& how fast u could pay it off or if u r planning to cut out movies, other new items, Sbux or whatever other expenditures you usually make....
u can make it happen with what u do afterwards with your money spending choices...
