They'd stock their tombs with objects needed in the afterlife, and magical implements and scrolls to allow them to pass the various tests of the afterlife and take various human and animal forms. The corpse was eviscerated and the "important" organs embalmed and placed in canopic jars; then it was mummified and enclosed within a series of sarcophagi, all protected by amulets and spells. The whole idea was to give the deceased all he'd need to survive the ordeals of the afterlife and to enjoy it. Obviously only the very rich and powerful, the kings and noblemen and high priests, could afford this sort of treatment.
