what kind of lizard has a big black body with a yellow stripe going down its back?

I just moved in this house and when coming from outside i noticed it running across the porch it almost looked like a snake but it had legs i have small kids so i dont want them to get hurt

Its a monitor lizard. They dont really harm unless threatened. And they're scary when confronted. Try calling an exterminator. i'm not sure if sulphur works on lizards as it does with snakes, but its worth a try i guess.

I don't know where you live, but I have heard of these lizards and they are harmless.
