Why do you assume that Earth is "home base" for humans? Why couldn't humans have developed in another place at another time independent of Earth?

This is an interesting question that has been asked in several science fiction series. Star Trek: Voyager had an interesting episode "Origins Theory" which posited that a species of advanced dinosaurs left Earth millions of years ago and colonized the galaxy. Humans were woefully primitive by comparison, unfortunately.

The Star Gate movie and series (and its spin-off) is based on this very idea. Humans, captured as slaves by a super-advanced evil alien race thousands of years ago, were transported all over the galaxy using the technology of a race called the Ancients, super-advanced humans who evolved prior to the current humans, and colonized the galaxies. (Yes, that's a plural!)

Although an entertaining question to ponder, I really doubt that this has happened. Humans as a species have only recently become capable of primitive near-space travel. If humans existed before there would be some proof, some sort of artifacts.
