Knocking noise could be a worn out upper rod bearing.
To much valve clearance would give a clicking noise.
Cam chain would give a wizzing noise.
To check the rod bearings -
-Remove all spark plugs.
-Look in one of the plug holes.
-Turn the crank to bring that piston to TDC and keep turning past, till the piston starts going down.
-Very very slowly, insert a thin screw driver, until it just touches the piston (NOT enough force to move the piston at all).
-Then push down on the screw driver (not enough force to turn the crankshaft).
-If you can push the piston down, then the rod is probably worn.
-It might help when testing, to get someone to turn the crank. When the piston is in position, turn the wrench back a touch to hold the crank from turning. Not enough to turn the crank.
-Test all cylinders.
---When the piston is pulled down, the wrist pin is pressed against the top of the connecting rod. Pushing down on the piston, pushes the wrist pin towards the bottom of the rod .

I was going to say connecting rod, and/or wrist pin bearring. guardrailjim has suggested an excellent way to test both.
